Robert Eugene Smith

DURHAM- Mr. Robert Eugene Smith, 83, of Durham, NC, passed away Saturday March 14, 2020 at Hock Family Pavilion. Mr. Smith was born to the late Astor and Ida Elma Moody Smith on October 12, 1936. Mr. Smith was of the Baptist faith, served in the National Guard, and would later retire after more than 30 years with Pifer Industries and Gage Carolina Metals working as a welder, a job he thoroughly loved. He was avid western movies fan, and especially enjoyed those starring John Wayne. In his spare time, he enjoyed working with wood at his home shop.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Smith was preceded in death by his wife of 40 years, Shirley Watkins Smith.
Mr. Smith is survived by his daughter, Tammy Smith; brother, Vance Smith (Lafay Smith); sister-in-law, Betty McGuire (Robert); brother-in-law, Bobby Watkins (Pat), and several nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be held 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, March 17, 2020 at Sorrell’s Grove Baptist Church Cemetery. Reverend Glenn Davis will officiate. Visitation will be held Monday, March 16, 2020 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Hudson Funeral Home.
