Sheila Swartz Carter

RALEIGH – Mrs. Sheila Swartz Carter, 89, passed away Saturday, June 11, 2022 at Duke University Hospital.

Mrs. Carter was the daughter of the late Henry Gilbert and Eleanor Byrd Swartz. Sheila was co-owner S. Swartz and Sons in Durham. Mrs. Carter was a member of White Memorial Presbyterian Church for many years. She loved her children and grandchildren dearly. She enjoyed trips to the beach, flowers and crafts. Christmas was her favorite time of the year and getting to spend time with family during the Christmas season. Shelia was always fashionable and brought positivity to everyone she was around. She was very spiritual, loved to read books and magazines. She was a classic Southern Belle.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Carter was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years Joseph “Joe” Carter, Jr. having married at Duke Chapel in 1952; brother, Allen Michael “Buz” Swartz Sr.; nephew, Allen Michael “Mike” Swartz, Jr.

Mrs. Carter is survived by her son; Joseph “Joe” William Carter, III. (Caryn) of Green Bay, WI; daughters, Elizabeth “Liz” Carter of Raleigh, NC, and Mary Carter Hudson (O. Thomas “Tommy”, Jr.) of Cary, NC; grandchildren, Joseph William Carter, IV (Aliki Triantafyllidis), Catherine Carter Mosser (John, Jr.), Lauren Clare Carter and fiancé, Brock Boone, Olivia “Brooke” Hudson (Scott Munn); niece, Amy Klein; nephew, Hank Swartz; 3 great nieces and 2 great nephews; sister-in-law, Barbara Swartz and her daughter-in-law, Katrina Swartz; brother-in-law, Tommy Carter and his family.

Flowers are acceptable or donations can be made to the Durham Rescue Mission at P.O. Box 11858 Durham, NC 27703.

A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, June 14, 2022 at 2:00 p.m. at Hudson Funeral Home Chapel. Visitation will be held an hour prior from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. Officiating will be Reverend Hugh O’Shields.
