Roger C Barr left a message on December 4, 2019:
Tom was a fellow faculty member and close research collaborator for over a decade. He was a genius on numerical algorithms and gave away more ideas than most of us have. He also was interested in all of Duke and in making computation available to everyone and was steadfast in his support for creation of a Computer Science Department and university computing facilities. That was during a time when many were skeptical and some were hostile. He was a collaborator with Madison Spach in one of the first uses of computers for serious analysis of medical problems. Over time he overcame reservations to numerical methods and computing with patience, good will, good humor and compelling logic. He wrote a wonderful and innovative introductory textbook about the fundamentals of computing for numerical analysis of linear systems. This book served as an introduction to the subject for me and many other students. Everyone who knew him will miss him, but we will remember his thoughtfulness, resilience, good will and optimism. More than most realize, he was one of the founders of the modern-day Duke university.
