Sisters Virginia Dare Ellis Hendrix & Betty Ellis Goodbar

A combined memorial service will be held for the two beloved sisters on March 19, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. at Hudson Funeral Home. Officiating will be Rev. Hugh O’Shields and Pastor Dorisanne Cooper. Two individual obituaries can be found below.

DURHAM – Mrs. Virginia Dare Ellis Hendrix

Mrs. Hendrix was born on June 22, 1924 to Arthur and Ellen Ellis in Durham, NC. She was originally from the Bethesda Community in Durham County before living in Florida for 65 years. Virginia loved flowers and gardening, she enjoyed motorhome touring and bowling with family and friends. Mrs. Hendrix loved to oil base paint, read and sew in her pass time. She was a generous mentor and nurturing maternal figure.

Mrs. Hendrix is preceded in death by her parents, Arthur and Ellen Ellis; husband, Julius G. Hendrix; brother, Harry Ellis; sister, Margaret Downey.

Mrs. Hendrix is survived by her sons, Brian Hendrix (Daisy) of Medford, OR, Glenn Hendrix (Dede) of Clarksville, TN; brother, Thomas Ellis (Celia) of Aurora, NC; sister, Betty Goodbar of Durham, NC; grandchildren, Melanie Thurman (Steven) of Orlando, FL, Nate Thurman (Amanda) of Oak Grove, KY, Lissa Hendrix of Medford, OR; great-grandchildren, Jennifer Witt, Taylor Witt, Zariya Thurman and DeMarcus Thurman.

DURHAM – Mrs. Betty Ellis Goodbar

Betty Ellis Goodbar, 90, of Durham, passed away March 5, 2022, from complications of Covid. She was surrounded by her loving family members during her illness and death.

Betty was born in Durham, North Carolina on October 18, 1931, to Arthur and Ellen Ellis, and grew up in Durham. Betty married the late Robert L. Goodbar, Jr. on June 30, 1951, and resided in Durham until his death in 2009. She worked for the Drama Department and English Department at Duke University as an Administrative Assistant for 35 years before retiring.

She is survived by her brother Thomas S. Ellis, and wife Celia; son Steve Goodbar, and wife Terri; her daughter Sherri Adams, and husband Forrest; three grandchildren, J.R. Elliott, Lindsey Starke, husband Dean, Jennifer Mann Talley; and 3 great-grandchildren, Ashlyn, Morgan, and Cooper.
